Every life is precious. In Gaza, the unbearable loss of an innocent child has happened over and again since October 2023. Even with the ceasefire, children continue to be killed in Gaza and the West Bank. Since October 2023, over 17,000 children have been killed. Throughout the war, an average of 10 children a day lost a limb and more than 38,000 children have been orphaned or have no adult left to care for them.

Orphans in Gaza are facing the added brutality of struggling for food and shelter, often while looking after younger siblings. The children of Palestine have endured months of famine-like conditions. 60,000 children need treatment for acute malnutrition, and the effects of malnourishment in childhood will continue to have effects on their lives and health for years to come.

The mercy of orphan sponsorship

For an orphan, not only do they have to cope the loss of their parents, but they suddenly have to think about how they will eat, how they will afford to survive.

Currently, 6,957 orphans are registered with Human Appeal and awaiting sponsors to help them regain their childhood.

Protection and transparency

Across all 14 countries where we sponsor orphans, we have a dedicated child safeguarding officer is in place. All staff working with children receive comprehensive training in child protection. Our local staff check in on all sponsored orphans to make sure they are well, in school, and receiving the care you intended, and we transparently report back to you how the child is in your biannual reports.

We also train mothers and caregivers on child protection, helping them to protect these orphans from common risks. We also work to help families with orphans in other ways, such as by training widowed mothers to have a livelihood to support her orphaned children.
